FARMINGTON - Firefighters from four departments spent most of Sunday moving and dousing some 2,500 large hay bales that were part of the loss from an early morning fire that claimed two sheds, about a dozen head of young livestock, two tractors and other equipment at a Polk County farm.

The New Richmond Fire and Rescue Department received the first call of a barn fire at a Town of Farmington farm complex named "Neuview Acres" -- a third-generation dairy operation operated by Roger and Laurie Neumann, and their sons Brett and Bjorn and their families -- at 2:12 a.m.

Polk County land records indicate the farmstead where the fire occurred is listed to the Clarence and Leona E. Neumann Living Trust at 2250 5th Ave.

Laurie Neumann said she and her husband, who live a short distance away, were awakened by a passerby knocking on their door around 2:15 a.m., asking if they knew "their neighbor's barn was on fire?" Looking across the fields, they realized it was their farm and it appeared the entire complex was ablaze.
