Non-perishable food and paper products will be collected for those less fortunate this month and again in December.

Food drives take place from now through Friday, Nov. 18, and Dec. 5-16. Items can be dropped off at any WESTconsin Credit Union office location, including Prescott and Spring Valley.

All proceeds will be delivered by the credit union to local food pantries for distribution. Monetary donations will also be accepted. For every $1 donated, local food pantries can collect and distribute approximately seven pounds of food.

The number of families in need has increased substantially in recent years, leaving food shelves less stocked than in the past. According to the 2000 US Census, 39,714 people in the 14 counties of West Central Wisconsin live in poverty, with 60 percent of them being children or elderly.
