Fresh Art Tour takes place next weekend
MAIDEN ROCK -- This year's Fresh Art Tour will include 14 sites from Durand on Hwy. 10 to Maiden Rock on Hwy. 35, the Great River Road.
The 14th annual tour will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Sunday, May 18-20.
"The overall tour gives participants the opportunity to have an art adventure in one of nature's remaining unspoiled regions, the area between the rivers, the villages of Pepin and Southern Pierce County," said Alisa Balterman. "The homes, studios and galleries, some formerly old farms and their out buildings, have been made into spaces of beauty. The gardens -- some of these artists are master gardeners as well--are blooming and charming."
She said many of the artists moved to this area in the 1970s, when country farmsteads were cheap, with the intention going "back to the land." Now a thriving art scene is located in the villages of Pepin, Stockholm, Maiden Rock, Durand, Arkansaw and Plum City.
Hilsgen Family Farm in Maiden Rock is among the stops. Gourmet cheese, hand-woven rugs, pure beeswax candles, homemade soaps, heirloom tomato/vegetable plants are available. Guest Artist Devon Johnson makes jewelry from salvaged material. The farm is at W3104 190th Ave., Maiden Rock.
Many of the studios on the tour have guest artists who display their work along with the host's work.
Sites on the tour are the Accola Gallery, Durand; Day/ Dunlap Studio, Arkansaw; Diane Millner studio, Pepin; Old Courthouse Museum, Durand; BNOX Gold & Iron, Pepin; T & C Latané, Pepin; Lake Pepin Art & Design Center, Pepin; Smith Bros. Landing, Pepin; Hilsgen Family Farm, Maiden Rock; Gail Pommerening Studio, Plum City; Pepin Farm Pottery, Maiden Rock; Flaming Fire Art Studio, Maiden Rock; Maiden Rock Inn, Maiden Rock; and Myklebust + Sears Studio, Stockholm.
