PLUM CITY -- Bonnie Frickson has lived in Michigan, Florida and Minnesota, but for her, nothing compares to her current home -- Plum City.

"I love this small town," she said. "Being able to smile or wave at the people you know. Plus, this is a great place to raise your kids and it's a very good school system."

Frickson was hired in August as the village's new clerk/treasurer, succeeding Jean McDonough, who retired after 20 years.

Frickson came to Plum City five years ago after previously living in Lake City, Minn., for 15 years. She found employment as a bartender at Dean's Bar and Grill in Plum City, but after a while, realized she wanted a change.

"I wanted to do more in the community and I couldn't do that while I was still at Dean's," she said.

As an example, Frickson will be certified in December as an EMT and then join the Plum City/Maiden Rock/Stockholm Ambulance Service. She praised the village for allowing her to achieve that objective.

Three months into the job, Frickson said, so far, so good.

"It's pretty much what I expected it to be," she said. "The board was very through and detailed in describing the job."

She also said it's been a benefit to have McDonough around as an advisor.

"She's been walking me through every step so far," Frickson joked. Frickson added McDonough has told her "to write everything down. You can't have too many notes."

Frickson said most of her time has been spent preparing for the upcoming election and end-of-the-year information.

"It's been very busy," she said. "There's a lot of government stuff you have to know."

One thing that has surprised her is the preparation for the election.

"I had no idea the work on the other side," she said. "It's been a learning process all the way around."

Being a part of the local government, Frickson has been impressed with her fellow officials.

"I've had no complaints from the public so far," she said. "(The village) does a good job of keeping the public informed and they've kept me informed about stuff going on."

Frickson is the mother of four -- Nikki, who lives in Plum City, Jenny, who lives in Durand, and two sons, both in the U.S. Marine Corps, Randy, who is currently stationed in Iraq, and Ricky, who is currently stationed in Afghanistan. She is also the grandmother of five. She currently lives in Plum City with boyfriend Tim Haglund, Dean's manager.
