'Friends' accomplish Ellsworth area cemetery restoration
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

TOWN OF SALEM--A group of 10 former members billing themselves as the Friends of Salem Church has joined with other volunteers to restore a cemetery at the site where Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church once stood.

Other than mowing, the cemetery hadn't been upgraded since the then-vacant church was taken down in 1987 and badly needed improvements, according to May Ramberg of River Falls, who agreed to provide the Herald with information about the restoration project, but didn't want special credit for her efforts. The group's members range in age from 68 to 89, Ramberg said.

"We all have family buried in this cemetery," she said, adding, "we felt the cemetery needed a lot of tender, loving repair and, if it was going to happen, it would have to be our generation."

People had talked "off and on" about restoring the cemetery over the years, she said. The 10 have been getting together monthly for the last three years toward making it a reality. A dedication reception this coming Sunday at the location near CTH D between Ellsworth and Maiden Rock, led by Pastor John Sutherland of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Beldenville and followed by a potluck supper at Hartland Methodist Church, will mark the milestone.
