Funeral today for well-known Somerset resort owner
SOMERSET - Funeral services are today in Somerset for a well-known resort owner in western Wisconsin whose rock band once opened at a Beach Boys concert in Amery.
63-year-old Billy Raleigh Sr. worked since childhood at the family business, River Edge resort on the Apple River near Somerset. He died last Friday of cancer.
Raleigh and his siblings started a rock band in the 1960's during his high school years in Maplewood. Pat Raleigh says the group took third in a battle-of-the-bands at the Minnesota State Fair in 1965. A year later, The Raleighs had their biggest gig ever, when they opened for the Beach Boys in Amery, Wisconsin. Raleigh served in Vietnam, then returned to River Edge where he introduced table-side cooking - the most famous being frog-legs.
Billy Raleigh's funeral begins at 11 this morning at Saint Anne Catholic Church in Somerset.
