Golden Gophers win season opener 9-0
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's hockey team scored four goals in each of the final two periods on Friday night on their way to a 9-0 season-opening win over Sacred Heart at Mariucci Area in front of nearly 9,000 fans.
Nick Bjugstad and Seth Ambroz each scored twice for Minnesota. Eight Gopher players finished with two points.
Minnesota goaltender Kent Patterson recorded his first career shutout with 20 saves while Pioneers' goalie Steven Legatto had to turn aside 38 shots.
The Gophers led 1-0 in the first minute when Kyle Rau, one of seven freshmen on the team, scored the season's first goal for the U.
Both teams will play again Saturday evening at Mariucci Arena. Face-off is at 7 p.m.
