Gophers put to consolation game in own tournament
MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 1 ranked University of Minnesota hockey team will have to play in the third placegame of their own home ice tournament as they were beaten by Colgate in a shootout at Mariuccia Arena Friday evening.
The Red Raiders and Golden Gophers played 2-2 tie in the Mariucci Classic semifinals. Minnesota trailed 2-1 after two periods as Colgate scored twice in the second. The Gophers needed Travis Boyd's power play goal in the third just to tie the game. The U led 1-0 after one period of play on Michael Brodzinski's goal. Minnesota outshot Colgate but Raider goalie Charlie Finn made 36 saves.
Colgate came into the game 7-9-2 overall. Although a loss for tournament purposes, the game counts as tie for Minnesota, its overall record now 12-2-3. The U was missing two players plus head coach Don Lucia due to the World Juniors Championship in Sweeden. MInnesota plays RPI in the third place game. Minnesota is 0-3 in shootouts this season.
