HASTINGS, Minn. -- A Hampton man will serve a year in the Dakota County Jail for a 2012 crash that killed a Cannon Falls man.

Keri James Gesme, 28, also must serve 10 years of probation and pay a $700 fine in connection with the crash, which killed Dennis Paul Underwood, 27.

Judge Karen Asphaug announced the sentence last week. Gesme pleaded guilty in December to a felony charge of criminal vehicular homicide.

The Nov. 8, 2012, crash occurred on Highway 50 just outside New Trier. When officers and medics arrived, they found a truck lying on the driver’s side in the yard of a residence. Underwood was found dead near a tree, and Gesme was found lying about 75 feet from where the truck landed.

A blood sample taken from Gesme after the crash indicated a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.20, more than twice the threshold for drunken driving. A Minnesota State Patrol reconstruction revealed that Gesme was the driver and was driving up to 106 mph when the truck went airborne.
