Happy Birthday, Kiwanis
PRESCOTT--Dave Roehl came to Prescott with the goal of starting a church.
While that church is no longer in existence, Roehl's other project which he started when he called Prescott home is still going strong.
The St. Croix Valley Kiwanis celebrated its 20th birthday Thursday and Roehl, who now lives in North Dakota, was the guest speaker, recalling stories about launching the club.
"Prescott had no Lions, no Rotary," he remembered. "We needed a service club in town."
Roehl, who belonged to Kiwanis in his previous stops before coming to Prescott, had a plan of attack.
"I was targeting people from different venues," he said. "Who do we want in our club?"
Eventually, 22 other people besides Roehl said yes, and five members (John Carlson, Carroll Lehman, Mavis Melstrom, Char Magee and Michael Toninato) are still members today.
