Hauenstein, Spring Valley girls get back to state
Prescott's Cole Hauenstein and the Spring Valley High School girls cross country team will be back running at the WIAA state meet after qualifying in Saturday morning's sectionals.
Hauenstein finished fourth individually at Division 2 Black River Falls Sectional run at Skyline Golf Course. He broke the 17:00 barrier with a time of 16:56 on the 5000-meter course in just his fourth race this season. Hauenstein made the state meet last fall as a junior.
Spring Valley's girls team easily defended their Division 3 sectional championship at Fall Creek yesterday. The No. 8 ranked Cardinals, led by two-sectional individual champion Breanna Colbenson, won first with 33 points, easily topping No. 12 Colfax who had 81. Colbenson's first place time was 15:11 and the Cardinals place four other runners in the top 10 in Riley Bowman, sixth in 17:07, Emma Gaustad, seventh in 17:09; Sarah King, ninth in 17:15 and Elizabeth Anderson, 10th in 17:17.
Ellsworth boys finish eighth out 15 schools and Prescott is 12th. Ellsworth girls place sixth in the D-2 meet. Lucas Green had EHS's best time in the boys race in 18:36 in 32nd place. Kennedy Kowalchyk and Becca Matzek each finished 25th and 26th in the girls' meet for Ellsworth while Annika Carlson led Prescott with a 23rd place showing.
PHS was incomplete as a girls' team after senior runner Victoria Simones came down with an injury and pulled herself out of the race, missing out on a chance to qualify for her fourth state meet.
Spring Valley's Julian Manley just missed qualifying for the state meet by one place as he finished 10th at the D-3 sectional. Elmwood/Plum City's McKayla Brunner was also closed to qualifying for state as she finished 17th. EPC's Noah Wells had his team's best finish in the boys' race by placing 20th. EPC's girls finished in ninth place, Spring Valley's boys' were 10th and the EPC's boys placed 11th out of 15 schools at the meet.
The WIAA State Meet is next Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids at the Ridges Golf Course.
