High school football season begins tonight, three county teams at home
The 2014 high school football season begins for Pierce County teams this Friday.
Three prep teams will be at home for their season openers. One team will have to wait a while before it gets its first home game.
Prescott will host Barron at Laney Field. The Cardinals won at Barron last season, part of a 7-4 campaign PHS hopes to duplicate or do even better than.
Spring Valley also had a fine 2013 season with 6-4 record and playoff berth. The Cardinals host Unity at Syverson Park. Last year SVHS had to play all of its home games in Menomonie at UW-Stout’s Williams Stadium. This fall the Cardinals have flown back to the Valley and will play four of their first five games there. Despite being on the road they still shutout Unity in last year’s season opener 31-0.
One lone bright spot in last season’s 3-6 campaign for Elmwood/Plum City was a season-opening win over Frederic. EPC will face the Vikings again to open the regular season in Elmwood at Raider Field.
Ellsworth will have to travel for its season opener. The Panthers will be at Spooner Friday looking for another season of success. EHS was 9-0 in 2013 starting with a 33-7 victory over the Rails. However, Ellsworth lost the last season opener they played in Spooner and the Railers too are coming off a good 2013 season where they made the playoffs.
Ellsworth will be on the road for its first three games. Its first home contest is Sept. 12 vs. Amery.
Kick-offs for all these games are at 7 p.m. Visit the Herald’s website for scores and the Herald's print edition for more insight on Friday's season openers and a look at next week's contests on newsstands Tuesday.
