Holiday concerts by Phipps Chorus Dec. 8
The Phipps Festival Chorus will perform its annual holiday concerts on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
The chorus, directed by Thomas Dahle, will perform a variety of seasonal songs, including a number of selections new to the choir's repertoire. Some of the new selections include "Northern Light," by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, "Make We Joy Now in this Fest," by British composer Malcom Archer, and "Stars I Shall Find," by David Dickau, Minnesota composer and director of choral activities at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The women of the choir will perform "Love Came Down at Christmas," written for four-part women's chorus by Mary Kaye Geston of Northwestern College, St. Paul.Works by British composers John Rutter, John Tavener, and Peter Warlock will be in the program, along with selections by J.S. Bach and Felix Mendelssohn. Familiar songs and carols round out the program, including "The First Nowell," "O Little One Sweet," and "On Christmas Night All Christians Sing."
Forty-eight singers from communities in the St. Croix Valley make up the Festival Chorus, founded by Dahle in 1990 and now in its 23rd season. Heather Tank, Hudson, is the accompanist.
