Is home-school right for your child?

SPRING VALLEY--Rebecca Kilde has home-schooled three kids in Spring Valley. Her 19-year-old is now an honors student at UW-Milwaukee--a fitting resume for Kilde’s regional-coordinator job for a statewide home-schooling support group.
Kilde, who handles Wisconsin Parents Association support in St. Croix, Polk, Pierce, Barron, Dunn and Pepin counties, knows well home-schooling is not for all parents and students.
Still, area parents thinking about home schooling are lucky, Kilde said. There are plenty of local resources to rely on, state regulations are parent- and home-schooling friendly, and now is a great time to get the process rolling.
“I always get a lot of calls this time of year because it’s the start of the second semester,” Kilde said in a telephone interview. “If parents have encountered some issues during the first semester that might lead them to home-schooling, this tends to be a point in the school year when they start making decisions.”
Kilde added: “People can start home-schooling any time during the year, but I get a flurry of calls now, at the beginning of the school year and at the end of the year…”
