Howard was born April 6, 1930, in El Paso Township, Pierce County, Wis., the son of Mathias 'Max' and Matilda (Jones) Kiefer. Farming was Howard's life. He grew up on the farm and milked cows his whole life. He never took a vacation, because according to Howard, his job was his vacation. On May 1, 1954, Howard married Beverly Winger and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this coming May.

Howard had many talents. He was a carpenter and helped build his son's homes. He was a mechanic and repaired and overhauled his equipment himself. If there was a job to do, he would find a way to get it done. He never gave up and no job was too big.

Howard was a charter member of the Eau Galle Rush River Sportsman's Club and helped organize the Gilman Creek Horseshoe Club, which all four sons were involved with.

Preceding him in death were his parents; 2 brothers: Ralph and Donald Kiefer; sister Macie O'Connell; and three infant sisters.
