Hubbers rout Everest, make it semifinals

OSSEO - Everest was considered one of the favorites for the Wisconsin Baseball Association State Tournament title. But the Ellsworth Hubbers made short work of the Merchants, winning 9-1 in the final quarterfinal game of the WBA tournament Saturday afternoon.

Ellsworth got another strong effort from winning pitcher Mitch Johnson, who went all nine innings, and from their defense in giving up just one earned run despite allowing 11 hits. The Hubs' committed just one error to Everest's three.

The top half of the Hubbers' batting line-up was like dynamite as Scott DeWyre went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Lance Murphy had three hits and scored four times. J.P. Paulson had two hits and two RBIs,, Lance Hove sacrificed in two runs and Cody Holden finished with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. In all Ellsworth had 13 hits.

Ellsworth plays Menomonie, who won 11-4 over Osceola in the day's other quarterfinal game, in the semis tonight at around 8 p.m. at Merchant's Park just off Hwy. 10 outside Osseo.
