Green is good, both for a business' image and for its bottom line, says the owner of Flat Pennies Ice Cream Shop in Bay City.

Though the paperwork isn't complete, Jim Ross expects to join over 100 Wisconsin tourism businesses that have earned the right to display the "Travel Green Wisconsin" logo.

"Basically what they're trying to do is create businesses environments that are as green as possible," said Ross of the Department of Tourism's initiative, which was launched last year.

"People come here to Wisconsin to really grasp the beauty of the state," said Ross. "We look at it as protecting what people expect to see when they get here."

To win the certification, a business must meet basic requirements and earn at least 30 points on the Travel Green Wisconsin checklist.

Businesses evaluate their operations, set goals and take specific actions toward sustainability. Points are earned in these areas:

--communication and education for customers, employees and the public;

--waste reduction, reuse and recycling;

--energy efficiency, conservation and management;

--water conservation and wastewater management;

--air quality;

--wildlife and landscape conservation and management;

--promoting energy conservation and independence in transportation;

--purchasing practices; and

--community benefits.

Certified businesses receive a Travel Green Wisconsin logo to use in promotional materials and web site listings, and are listed on the web site
