John J. Wagner, 97
John J. Wagner, age 97, of Ellsworth, Wis., formerly of Bay City, Wis., died Sunday, July 21, at Mayo Clinic Health System, Red Wing, Minn.
John was born on March 9, 1916, in the town of Ellsworth, the son of John and Rose (Wagner) Wagner. He was baptized in the Catholic faith and attended Sleepy Hollow School. After he graduated from Sleepy Hollow, he worked for area farmers, and in 1938, he went to work for the Pierce County Highway Department. In 1939 he married Mary Steinert; together they lived in Ellsworth. In 1944 John was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served honorably for the next 2 years. In 1973 Mary passed away, and in 1976, he moved to Bay City where he married Elizabeth Robelia. After 40 years of service to Pierce County, John retired in 1978.
John enjoyed hunting; fishing; gardening; playing cards; woodworking, especially making bird houses and a few cabinets; and going to the casino. Elizabeth passed away in 1994.
John was preceded in death by his two wives, Mary and Elizabeth; two sisters, Rosella Northy, Annie (Thurber) Johnson; and brother George.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church and for 1 hour prior to the Mass on Thursday.
Military honors accorded John by Harding-Hall-Darrington American Legion Post #357, Bay City.
