LaVerna 'Sis' Thomas, age 92, of Spring Valley, Wis., died Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Spring Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center.
'Sis' was born Sept. 12, 1920, the daughter of John and Esther (Rider) McCumber at Weyerhaeuser, Wis. She grew up and attended school in the Weyerhaeuser area.
On Nov. 24, 1936, Sis married Roy Thomas, at Pastor Wolf's home, in Ladysmith, Wis. They lived in Eau Claire for a short time and moved to the Holcombe area where she worked as a cook in a logging camp. They also purchased a small farm near Sheldon. 'Sis' and Roy moved to South St. Paul where they lived for about 2 years.
In 1946, they moved to a farm at Clear Lake, Wis. Besides helping on the farm, Sis worked as a cook at the Clear Lake School. They sold their farm in 1977, and moved to Spring Valley, Wis., where they lived until 2000, when they moved to Menomonie. Sis worked as a cook at the Spring Valley Health Care Center for over 20 years. She loved watching a good ball game and followed the Vikings, Twins, Brewers and the Spring Valley Cardinals. She loved to bake and create crafts.
Preceding her in death were his parents; her husband Roy; son Harvey Thomas, and 3 brothers: John McCumber, Kenneth McCumber, and Donald Jones.
Survivors include 2 sons: Bob (Helen) Thomas of Menomonie, and Larry (Glenise) Thomas of Boyceville; daughter-in-law Audrey (Rod Flatland) Thomas of Wilson; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister Florence Thomas of Clear Lake; 1 brother Clifford (Delores) Jones of Woodbury; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley. Funeral service was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Spring Valley, with Rev. Erin Nelson officiating. Music was provided by organist Linda Anderson and vocalist Debbie Bowman. Burial was in Weyerhaeuser Cemetery, Weyerhaeuser, Wisconsin.
Pallbearers were Sis's grandsons Mark Thomas, David Thomas, Dan Thomas, Troy Thomas, Jeff Thomas and Steve Thomas. Honorary bearers were Joe Snell, Clark Bobert, Gary Borgerding, Craig Thatcher, Rick Saletri.
