Lending a hand idea practiced by Ellsworth schools

Volunteerism isn't new to students in the Ellsworth School District.

For example, the "Just Do Something" organization at the local high school has been around for a long time. But a further effort to promote volunteering grew from the district's recent strategic planning initiative, resulting in the creation of a new volunteer coordinator position this school year.

Rather than only students getting involved, staff and the entire community are now targeted. Coordinator Anne Pechacek said Thursday she's strived to make connections with area civic organizations.

"There are so many different avenues for volunteers to pursue," Pechacek said, agreeing students who develop this habit early will have it follow them all of their lives.
