Letter: Amendment needed to clarify free speech right, she says
TO THE EDITOR: We the People...
The preamble to the Constitution begins, "We, the people..." The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law...abridging the people's freedom of speech..."
Nowhere does the word "corporations" occur in these two statements. The recent Supreme Court ruling has extended the rights of individuals to that of entities which wouldn't exist without legal designation.
What we need now is a Constitutional amendment to clarify the First Amendment right of free speech belongs to people as individuals, not corporations. You vote and I vote, but corporations do not.
If we don't fine tune the Amendment, we'll have ceded control of election campaigns to the deep pockets of these legal entities.
