Board member finds post most interesting part of kids' education
TO THE EDITOR:
Heads up to anyone interested in running for school board.
The filing deadline is Jan. 6. Contact the superintendent's office for the form.
I am currently in my second year of the three-year term. I have found this position to be the most interesting part of my children's education. Mostly because I have become educated.
The school board is not just about money -- it is about children. They are the most important piece of our education system. It drives our decisions on where to put money to get what we feel children really need to get the most out of an education.
We can get so wrapped up in the money piece of it that we forget that what this money is doing is "growing" our children. They need to feel good about being in school (the building itself), about the adults they come in contact with and about the activities during and after school. When kids feel good both physically and mentally, they can learn.
That is what will drive my thinking when the budget cuts are presented in the next few months. How will these cuts affect children's learning? Bottom line, that's why we are here. Increasing class sizes won't help them learn, cutting all extra-curricular won't help them learn. These will be tough decision times, but I want you to know that we are doing our best to make decisions for your kid's education and not to hurt that.
Please be patient and see the whole picture. I appreciate your support.
