Letter: Earth Day is April 22--you can help, he says
TO THE EDITOR:
This year, April 22, 2009, is the chosen date for all of us in Pierce and surrounding counties to participate in Earth Day.
This theme was founded by Sen. Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970, 39 years ago. He died at the age of 89 on July 3, 2005.
For all these years, our Trimbelle Rod and Gun Club has observed this date by taking part in the stewardship responsibilities of caring for our land and the outdoors where we live. All of us can participate in these many ways: roadside pickup is one, now that spring is here. The roadside and ditches show the great amount of cans, glass bottles, plastic and paper items tossed out over the winter months. Our streams get a lot of this debris also.
We ask that you involve the family to help with this project, taking youngsters with you with several bags to collect the above items. Make sure this is done in a safe manner, walking the ditches one side at a time.
It is amazing the amount of debris that is collected and, though we are proud of the good job done, it seems we may never get people to stop throwing trash out the windows of their cars, and yet every time we enlist someone in a roadside or stream cleanup project that is also one more spokesperson for our "Stop Littering" campaign.
Individuals and groups can "Adopt A Highway." If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Remember "Earth Day" is April 22--Let's make Earth Day Every Day--All Year Long.
