Letter: 'Lunch ladies' should continue to do job hired to do, she says

TO THE EDITOR: Food safety is one of the most important concerns in the food service industry.

Improper food handling or unsafe conditions can lead to foodborne illness, disease or even death.

Food handlers working in the food service industry should be responsible and know safe food handling techniques and procedures.

I do not believe that elementary age children can fully comprehend the importance of such regulations that are stipulated by the state and federal guidelines.

It is my understanding that the elementary age kids are serving themselves their lunch, with the exception of the "lunch ladies" serving their hot entrée. With 200-plus children just in Hillcrest alone, that is a tremendous amount of little hands on serving utensils.

I think the enormous amount of germs that could be spread is too big of a risk to be taking. No one can guarantee that all have washed their hands before touching a serving utensil and placing it in the food.

A child may cough or sneeze while standing in the lunch line, which in turn, when the child grabs for that tong for fruit will contaminate that item for the next person in line.

Throughout the years, every school district has "lunch ladies" which have been hired for the specific job of making and serving food to our children. Let's have them continue to do the job they were hired to do.
