Letter: Sandy Hook almost feels like another 9/11, he says

Email

TO THE EDITOR: In some respects, the Sandy Hook school killings have an almost Sept. 11 feel to them because they have caused us to change both our perspectives and our lives.

While 9/11 proved what people who hated America were capable of doing, the Sandy Hook killings stole a part of our soul because it showed us an evil we didn't think existed. No rational person will ever be able to forget what this kind of evil personifies. It makes us so sad that we are flummoxed with regard to what to do about it. Feeling sad beyond description is normal, but sadness is not a productive emotion.

We need to be mad as hell and actually do something. For starters, we need to get rid of every sign on every building that says "This is a gun free building" immediately. Even insane murders are not stupid. This is why the Aurora, Colo., killer bypassed three closer more crowded theaters to find one that had a "This is a gun free building" sign posted.

How much easier can we make it for these crazies? How about a sign on every building that says, "Intruders will be met with an armed response"?

No drug, no law and no amount of tolerance can fully eliminate an evil that does not recognize the preciousness of life. I cannot fathom the pain that this evil has caused to those poor Connecticut families, but I pray that we all can find some comfort in these lines by Hans Christian Andersen.

"Then the child opened its eyes, and looked into the angel's beautiful face, which beamed with happiness, and at the same moment they were in heaven, where joy and bliss reigned. The child received wings like the other angel, and they flew about together, hand in hand."
