TO THE EDITOR:

Congratulations to Prescott's Nick Schommer, who was reported in the April 29 Herald as being the first young man from Pierce County drafted by the NFL.

Actually, Nick is the second from Pierce County drafted by the NFL because Elmwood's Sam Wheeler was drafted as a linebacker, from the Wisconsin Badgers, by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1968, according to an article in the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram and the NFL draft history on www.espn.com. The Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League named Wheeler in their 12th round.

Wheeler became a regular on the Badgers' defensive team. He was one of the team captains and earned their black helmet award for outstanding achievement.

Wheeler played his high school football under Coach Arnie McKernon, graduating from Elmwood in 1964. The Elmwood Booster Club honored Wheeler as a standout athlete.
