Local teens earn Eagle Scout awards
A pair of Ellsworth teens--one who just graduated and another who is beginning his senior year--was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout June 9 at a ceremony at American Legion Post 204.
Tyler E. Thomas, 18, and Spencer J. Redding, 17, were presented their awards by State Rep. Warren Petryk, who achieved his Eagle award 43 years ago, and State Sen. Sheila Harsdorf. Also present was Ellsworth resident Bernard Meacham, Thomas' longtime friend and neighbor, and Troop 138's first Eagle Scout. Meacham also coached Tyler in achievement of his aviation badge.
Parents of the boys are Lynn Loesch of Ellsworth and Bryan Thomas of Maple Grove, Minn., and Deanna and Jeff Redding of Ellsworth.
Loesch, who helped organize the ceremony, said she initially invited Harsdorf not knowing the senator's availability. Harsdorf, in turn, shared the invite with Petryk and the pair showed up together.
Loesch said Petryk presented each of the boys with American flags that had flown over the state Capitol and Gov. Scott Walker's staff sent along Wisconsin flags for each, also which had been flown in Madison.
For their required projects, the boys made new signs for a couple of area parks, Loesch said. Redding created a sign which identifies Ellsworth's East End Park, and Thomas made and installed one for Saratoga Park in Bay City.
Thomas plans to attend the University of Tampa this fall, possibly pursing pre-law studies and a music minor. She wasn't sure of Redding's career interests.
