Lots of local Division 2 and 3 wrestlers in semifinals
MADISON - Eight wrestlers from the Rivertowns area will be competing in the semifinals in Division 2 and 3 this evening at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.
These wrestlers advanced through the quarterfinals Friday morning and early afternoon.
Ellsworth has the bulk of these wrestlers, five in all starting with Jens Lantz at 103 pounds he shutout Sheboygan Falls' Alex Fitzgerald 11-4. Roarke Langer was just as stingy as he beat Freedom's Devin Bera by a 9-1 score at 125. D.J. Yarwood started string and held on for a 9-6 win over Mosinee's Jordan Roosa at 140. Levi Kuesel topped Luxemburg-Casco's Matt Zellner 12-3 at 152 and Parker Hines major decisioned Valders' Austin Shillcox 13-5.
Somerset has two semifinalists. Gabe Flandrick faced an opponent he knew well in Nick Mohr of the Wisconsin Dells and used that to his advantage in winning 9-2 at 135. His Spartan teammate Haydon Dvorak had to eke out a 1-0 win over Gage Ferkey of Nekoosa-Port Edwards at 171.
Spring Valley-Elmwood's Brady Webb will be competing in the Division 3, 112-pound semis after beating Peshtigo's Josh Bayer 8-2.
The semifinal match-ups pit Lantz against Cuba City-Southwestern's J.J. Donar (46-2); Webb will take on Mineral Point's Devin Walrack (33-7); Langer faces Luxemburg-Casco's Zach Skarda (38-11); It's Flandrick against Seymour's Alex Schramm (38-5); Yarwood vs. River Valley's Seth Leigel (39-2); Kuesel against Jackson Fox of Wrightstown (40-7); Dvorak against Adams-Friendship's Dustin Kirsenlor (42-5) and Hines will square up with Freedom's Ben Beyer (38-9).
Two other area wrestlers will also place in the state tournament despite losing their quarterfinal matches.
Ellsworth's Zac Reister lost to Plainfield Tri-County/Almond-Bancroft's Brandon Clapper 8-3 at 215 and at the same weight class in the same Division St. Croix Central's Marcus Malecek was beaten 5-0 by Riley Delzer of Oconto Falls after Delzer scored a takedown and three-point nearfall in the third period. But Reister came back to beat Richland Center's Logan Schmidt 5-1 and Malecek defeated Kiel's Derek Fritsch 6-2.
Ellsworth Tanner Eggenberger was eliminated from the tournament by losing 3-0 to L-C's Zak Peters in the 160-pound quarterfinals and then losing 3-1 to Jamey Simmons of Abbotsford-Colby.
