Jonathon D. Wierstad, 24, who was living in Hudson at the time, was arrested by Hudson police April 9 and has been charged with felony physical child abuse –- recklessly causing great bodily harm. He was living with the boy’s mother.

According to investigators, the boy suffered major head trauma. After being transported to Hudson Hospital, the child was transferred to Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, where doctors said bleeding in the front and back of the boy’s brain was consistent with child abuse.

During surgery, 1.5 liters of blood were drained from the boy’s brain.

As of Tuesday, the boy’s condition was listed as critical and his prognosis was grave.

According to police reports, Wierstad first told investigators the boy tripped over a pile of clothes in a bathroom. When he was questioned again, Wierstad allegedly changed his story and said the boy fell on his head when Wierstad failed to catch him after throwing him into the air.

As a condition of bail, Wierstad was ordered to have no contact with the boy’s family or witnesses in the case.

His preliminary hearing in St. Croix County Court is scheduled for April 29.
