Man crushed against lock wall

A deckhand on a southbound barge was flown to St. Marys in Rochester with serious injuries after being pinned between a barge and the lock wall at U.S. Lock & Dam 3 Sunday.

The barges had locked through just north of Red Wing on the Mississippi River and were tied to the lock wall below the lock chamber waiting for the tugboat to lock through when Clayton Little, 30, Reagan, Tennessee, was crushed against the lock wall in a ladder well, according to Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office.

Little was able to climb out, authorities said, and was transported from the scene by Mayo One helicopter.

The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will also investigate the incident.

GCSO was assisted at the scene by Prairie Island Police Department and Red Wing Ambulance and Rescue.
