Matthys' DARE essay named Best in State
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

To graduate from Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), one of the requirements is to write an essay, stating what’s been learned.

Spring Valley fifth grader Madeline Matthys wrote one, but didn’t like it, so she started over again.

It turned out to be a wise decision, as her second version was named the Best in State by the Wisconsin DARE Officers Association.

Pierce County Sheriff’s DARE Officer Steve Albarado said, after initially reading Matthys’ essay, he knew it was a good one, as it covered a scope of topics in the DARE curriculum, including alcohol, drugs and bullying. That feeling led him to submit it to the state board as the best one from the nine county schools he covered this year.

Matthys had no idea her essay was selected for the state level, so her and her family’s reaction upon winning was unexpected.

“Her eyes were as big as saucers,” said her father Jason said. “She was shocked and surprised.”

Added Albarado, “Maddie’s essay was selected because hers was the best,” quashing any speculation of favoritism as Jason works for the Sheriff’s Department as its Chief Deputy.
