May 3 steak feed and dance will help equip Plum City fire unit
PLUM CITY -- It might be said Plum City-Union fire fighters are staking their reputations on an event they plan for early next month.
Their third annual steak feed and dance fundraiser on Saturday, May 3, not only features some of the members putting cooking skills to the test, but is an important part of efforts to equip the department. Based on the success of the first two such fundraisers, area residents have endorsed the unit.
"We doubled the outcome in our first two," Mike Lifto of the PCUFD said Tuesday.
Proceeds from this year's version will go toward the purchase of a thermal imaging camera, Lifto said. The department has never had its own camera, forced to borrow similar equipment when needed from neighboring units in Elmwood or Ellsworth. The camera can display hot spots which may not otherwise be detected for extinguishing.
"It can show someone who's near a wall that we need to go get, too," he said.
Officials hope to raise enough funds to also buy some self-contained breathing apparatus the fire fighters wear when entering burning buildings, Lifto said. There are approximately 30 members to outfit and they respond in a territory including the village and the surrounding town, plus provide mutual aid to other departments, when requested.
One pumper, a couple of tankers and a brush truck comprise the PCUFD fleet, he said. The unit is based at the Public Safety Building in town.
