Merger to create state's, nation's largest specialty paper company
WAUSAU - The merger of four Wisconsin paper mills will create the state's biggest papermaking company, measured by total jobs.
Eighteen hundred people will work at the as-yet unnamed company. A New York private equity firm is buying Rhinelander and Mosinee paper mills from Wausau Paper Corporation and the Kaukauna and De Pere mills from Thilmany Papers. Union ratification at three of the paper mills has cleared the way for the deal to be finalized.
All four of those mills produce specialty papers for packaging, like candy wrappers and microwave popcorn bags. The four will comprise the biggest specialty paper company in the U.S.
