Minnesota college hockey news: U women's team wins opener
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's hockey team is ranked No. 4 in the nation and finished the weekend with a pair of wins.
The Golden Gophers skated by Syracuse 4-0 on Saturday night at Ridder Arena and knocked off Union 6-1 on Friday. The 2-0 Gophers host St. Cloud State this Friday and Saturday.
The University of Minnesota men's hockey team beat British Columbia 3-0 in an exhibition game last night at Mariucci Arena. Jake Hansen of White Bear Lake; Erik Haula of Pori, Finland; and Blake Thompson of Eden Prairie each tallied goals. Goaltenders Kent Patterson of Plymouth and Mike Shibrowski of Andover turned away ten shots total for the shutout. Minnesota begins regular season play on Friday night when Sacred Heart visits the Twin Cities for a 7 p.m. game.
The defending NCAA champion The Minnesota-Duluth men's hockey team won an exhibition game over Lakehead last night 5-1 in Duluth. Travis Oleksuk scored twice for the winning Bulldogs, who open regular season play at home against Notre Dame on Friday.
Bemidji State won its men's hockey preseason game last night 7-0 over Regina. Jordan George and Matt Carlson each had a goal and an assist in the win. The Beavers over the regular season Friday at Miami of Ohio.
