Minnesota man dies in boat accident on St. Croix River
A 40-year-old Afton, Minnesota man died Wednesday night after a boat he was riding in collided with a rockface north of Kinnikinnic State Park.
David Joseph Riley was pronounced dead at the scene by Pierce County Medical Examiner John Worsing around 11:45 p.m., said Sheriff's Investigator Tom Gunderson.
Gunderson stated the boat was north on the St. Croix River when it struck the rock face of the State Park beach on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River.
Investigation indicates Patrick A. Puhalla, 46, Bayport, Minn., was the owner and operator of the boat when the accident occurred. He, and fellow passenger Daniel M. Schultz, 55, Hudson, were transported from the scene by River Falls Ambulance Service with undetermined injuries.
Gunderson said the Sheriff's Department and the Department of Natural Resources are still investigating the accident.
The Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by River Falls Fire Department, Kinnikinnic State Park personnel and the St. Croix Sheriff's Department.
