Minnesota Sports Briefs: U athletic department goes on statewide tour
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota athletic department is taking the show on the road this summer. The "Gopher Road Trip: Chalk Talk" tour begins this Thursday and will continue with various visits around the state through June 20th.
The visits to 16 Minnesota cities and towns will feature guest appearances from football coach Jerry Kill, men's basketball coach Richard Pitino, men's hockey coach Don Lucia, athletic director Norwood Teague, and other coaches and Gopher dignitaries. Donovan McNabb will reportedly retire as an Eagle. The "Philadelphia Daily News" reports McNabb confirmed on his radio show Monday that he will be retiring as an Eagle in September. He said the team has suggested doing it on the 19th when former Eagles and current Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid makes his return to Philly. McNabb also played for the Vikings and Redskins.
The WNBA Minnesota Lynx continue with training camp and have their entire roster now. Rebekkah Brunson had been playing internationally in the Czech League and had to wait for that season to end before reporting to WNBA camp. She worked out for the first time with the Lynx on Sunday. The team will have a practice today. The Lynx have their first preseason game this Saturday in Bismarck, North Dakota against Washington.
Kentucky Derby winner "Orb" arrived in Baltimore yesterday ahead of Saturday's 138th running of the Preakness Stakes. "Orb" will occupy Stall 40 at Pimlico prior to Saturday's race. The post draw for the race will take place tomorrow.
Drivers will continue to test their cars this week ahead of Saturday's Pole Day for the Indy 500. Qualifying will continue on Sunday with Bump Day as drivers try to secure a spot in the field. The 500 will be run a week from Sunday on May 26th. Dario Franchitti won last year's race.
