MINNEAPOLIS- The University of Minnesota men's hockey team needed just one lone goal to beat Michigan State Saturday at Mariucci Arena.

Kyle Rau's first period goal was the lone point of the game. Minnesota outsshot MSU 38-19 and Spartan goalie Jake Hildebrand made 37 saves while U goalie Adam Wilcox made 18. No. 1 ranked Minnesota improves to 19-2-5 overall and 8-0-2 in the Big Ten, well ahead of second-place Michigan. The Gophers play at Wisconsin next weekend.

The No. 1 ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team swept North Dakota with a 3-1 win Saturday evening in Grand Forks, N.D. Dani Cameranesi's two power-play goals helped the U take a 3-0 lead by the third period. Meghan Lorence also scored for the Gophers and winning goalie Amanda Leveille made 17 saves. Minnesota is 26-1-1 overall, 20-1-1 in the WCHA.

Mikael Backlund scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Calgary Flames completed a perfect five-game homestand with a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. TJ Galiardi added a goal and an assist for the Flames. Dennis Wideman also lit the lamp. Calgary goaltender Karri Ramo left the game late in the first period with a lower-body injury. Reto Berra stopped 14-of-17 shots in relief. Calgary swept a five-game homestand for the first time since Feb. 7-15, 1997. The hot stretch at home comes just two weeks after the Flames set a franchise record by losing seven straight in their own building. Dany Heatley had a goal and an assist for the Wild, who went 1-1-2 on a four- game road trip. Matt Cooke and Keith Ballard also lit the lamp. Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper turned aside 28-of-32 shots in defeat.

Kyle Korver scored 24 points and Paul Millsap added 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 120-113 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. DeMarre Carroll added 19, Jeff Teague scored 19 points and handed out eight assists and Mike Scott scored 14 points off the bench for the Hawks, winners in two straight.Kevin Love poured in a game-high 43 points and pulled down 19 rebounds and Kevin Martin added 17 points for the Timberwolves, losers in two straight. Korver was 3-for-3 from 3-point range in the third quarter as the Hawks exploded for 38 points on 14-of-26 shooting overall. Atlanta held the Wolves to just 21 points in the period and scored 17 points off eight Minnesota turnovers.

A three-pointer by Tre Demps with under a minute remaining proved to be the difference as the Northwestern Wildcats held on for the 55-54 win against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Big Ten Conference play at Williams Arena. Demps finished with 11 points off the bench for the Wildcats (12-11, 5-5 Big Ten) as they won for the fourth time in the last five outings. Drew Crawford led the offense with 17 points and JerShon Cobb chipped in 15, including key free throws down the stretch for the visitors. Minnesota (15-7, 4-5), which has lost two straight and three of the last four, was led by Maurice Walker with 14 points in a reserve role, followed by Austin Hollins with 13.
