MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: Gophers get win at Maui Invite
MAUI, Hawaii - The University of Minnesota men's basketball team went on a 25-4 run midway through the second half to beat Chaminade 83-68 Wednesday afternoon to take seventh in the Maui Invitational.
The Golden Gophers found themselves trailing 59-51 to the host school, an NCAA Division II institution, before going on their run to win the game and improve their record to 6-2 overall. DeAndre Mathieu scored 17 points to lead the Gophers while Malik Smith and Mo Walker both scored 10 points from off the bench. The U lead 14-3 to start the ballgame. The Gophers next game is Tuesday at home vs. Florida State. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. at Williams Arena and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh is being honored as the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week. Walsh went four-for-four on field goal attempts at Green Bay Sunday, including a 35-yard kick in overtime that tied the game at 26. He also had a season-high five kickoff touchbacks. This is the fourth time Walsh has received the award. Rookie kick returner/wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson was named Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against the Packers in Week 8.
