MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: Gophers, UMD to play for North Star Cup title
ST. PAUL - The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the University of Minnesota-Duluth's men's hockey teams will play for the inaugural North State Cup in tonight's tournament finals at the Xcel Energy Center. Both teams were winners in Friday night's semifinals.
UMD defeated Minnesota State 5-4 in overtime off Alex Ifalleo's goal with seconds left in the overtime period while the No. 1 ranked Golden Gophers crushed No. 5 St. Cloud State, scoring four unasnwered goals after SCSU took a 1-0 lead in the first period. U goalie Adam Wilcox made 38 saves. Face-off for the finals is set for 7 p.m. while the consolation game between MSU and St. Cloud State will begin at 4 p.m.
The No.1 ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team shutout St. Cloud State at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis Friday 3-0. Meghan Lorence scored twice for the Golden Gophers and Sarah Davis scored a goal. Kate Schipper made two assists and winning goalie Amanda Leville made 15 saves. The U outshot the Huskies 47-15. The series concludes this evening at 7 p.m.
Kevin Martin's go-ahead left baseline jumper with 8.4 seconds remaining lifted the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 121-120 win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night. Harrison Barnes' right wing jumper at the buzzer was off the mark for Golden State. Kevin Love tallied 26 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists, while Martin finished with 26 points for Minnesota, which has won three straight on the heels of a three-game skid. Stephen Curry had 33 points and 15 assists, while David Lee added 23 points and seven boards for the Warriors, who have dropped four of their last five tilts.
