MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: U women's hoops coach Borton fired
MINNEAPOLIS - Pam Borton was fired from her job as University of Minnesota women's basketball head coach today. Borton had been head coach for the past 12 seasons.
Borton coached the Golden Gophers to the Final Four in her second season in 2004 however the program was never able to reach those heights again. Minnesota hasn't made NCAA Tournament in five seasons and was recently ousted from the Women's NIT Tournament by South Dakota State. Borton's overall record at Minnesota was 236-152 and 105-95 in the Big Ten. The U will be paying Borton $335,000 in the buyout of her contract, which runs to 2016.
Mike Napoli homered to help lead the Boston Red Sox over the Minnesota Twins, 4-0, in exhibition action from Hammond Stadium. Mike Carp added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for the Red Sox, who pounded out 10 of their 11 hits against Minnesota starting pitcher Phil Hughes. Hughes suffered the loss, allowing four runs, walking one and striking out two in 5 1/3 innings. Felix Doubront started for Boston and pitched five shutout innings.
