MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Gopher hoops beat Purdue
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota senior guard Austin Hollins recorded 18 points and nine rebounds as Minnesota topped Purdue 82-79 on Sunday at Williams Arena. Gopher junior Andre Hollins added 17 points and DeAndre Mathieu had 11 for the Golden Gophers, who improved to 12-and-3 and 1-and-1 in the Big Ten. The Gophers built a 19-point second half lead, but the Boilermakers rallied to within three points in the closing moments. Purdue is now 10-and-5 overall and 0-and-2 in the league. Minnesota travels to Penn State on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are in Philadelphia to face the 76ers tonight. Minnesota will then return home for games against Phoenix and Charlotte on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. The T'wolves have dropped two-of-three after Saturday's 115-111 setback to the Thunder. Minnesota is 16-and-17 on the year. Philly is 12-and-21, but has won four straight, including an impressive road win over Portland on Saturday. This evening's game tips off at 6 p.m.
The top draft choice of the Minnesota Timberwolves has been sent to the team's NBA Development League squad in Iowa. Shabazz Muhammad was sent to the D-League Iowa Energy yesterday and will play with the club for the foreseeable future. The next game for the Energy is tomorrow night in Reno. Muhammad played in only 11 games with the Wolves this season, averaging 1.1-points per game. Muhammad was the 14th overall selection in the NBA draft last spring and was acquired by the Wolves in a trade with the Utah Jazz.
The Minnesota Wild clash with the Los Angeles Kings tomorrow night California. Minnesota will then wrap up the brief two-game road trip on Thursday in Phoenix. The Wild have won two in-a-row on the heels of a six-game losing streak following Saturday's 5-3 victory over Washington. They sit at 22-17-and-5 on the season. The Kings are 26-13-and-4. Tomorrow's opening face off is set for 9:30 p.m. The Wild reassigned forward Brett Bulmer to A-H-L Iowa yesterday. The 21-year-old Bulmer was recalled by Minnesota and played in Saturday's win over Washington for Minnesota.
One of the Twins top prospects is being suspended by Major League Baseball. Second baseman Eddie Rosario will miss 50-games after failing a drug test for the second time. Rosario is currently on the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats roster.
The Minnesota Vikings have been without a head coach for a week. General manager Rick Spielman is in search of the new bench boss and has reportedly conducted a handful of interviews with various candidates, mostly with current NFL coordinators. Leslie Frazier was let go last Monday, a day after a season-closing win over Detroit.
