MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Parise's two goals help Wild rout Calgary

 Minnesota winger Zach Parise tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Wild to a 5-1 rout of the Calgary Flames at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul last night. Team captain Mikko Koivu added a goal and two helpers for Minnesota, which improved to 9-4-and-3. Josh Harding was the winning goaltender for Minnesota. The Wild begin a two-game road trip tomorrow in Washington against the Capitals.

The Timberwolves open a two-game homestand tonight against the Golden State Warriors at the Target Center. Minnesota will then host Dallas on Friday. The T'wolves are 3-1 on the season following Monday's 93-92 setback to the Cavaliers in Cleveland. The Warriors opened their four-game road trip with a 110-90 rout of the previously unbeaten 76ers on Monday in Philadelphia. The Warriors sit at 3--1 on the young season. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at the Target Center.

Golden Gopher quarterback Phillip Nelson of Mankato says he plans to play in this weekend's home game against Penn State. The sophomore signal-caller momentarily left last week's win at Indiana with a hip pointer. Nelson says there is some pain, but he believes he'll be able to play through it this Saturday. He did practice yesterday. Nelson threw four touchdown passes in last week's win at Indiana and won Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. Minnesota's game against the Nittany Lions kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The University of Minnesota athletic department is offering ticket specials for this weekend's home football game against Penn State. The school's athletic marketing department is framing the game as the "Bring The Heat" game, with tickets starting at $20. Fans will get free handwarmers when they arrive at the stadium and are asked to "bring the heat." The 7-2 Golden Gophers have won three straight Big Ten games and a win against the Nittany Lions would be the first four-game Big Ten winning streak for Minnesota since 1973. Several area swimmers and divers have been honored for their efforts over the past week. Golden Gopher star diver Maggie Keefer of Stillwater is this week's Big Ten Conference women's Diver of the Week. The senior standout has now won the weekly honor 13 times in her career and three times this year. She won the one-meter and three-meter events in a dual win over Iowa. Her teammate Breanne Siwicki of Winnipeg is the league's Freshman Swimmer of the Week. Siwicki won all three of her events in the win over the Hawkeyes. Gopher men's swimmer Daryl Turner of Aurora, Colorado is this week's Big Ten men's Freshman of the Week. He won two events and finished second in a third event in a dual win over Iowa. St. Cloud State junior Tori Raihle of Spring Lake Park is the NSIC Diver of the Week for the second straight week. She won the one-meter and three-meter dives at an invitational in Northfield.
