MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Twins on the road in Oakland after losing in extras to San Diego
MINNEAPOLIS -- The San Diego Padres put up a run in the ninth to tie the game and a run in the tenth inning to pull out a 5-4 win over the Twins and split of their two-game series at Target Field. Trevor Plouffe hit a two-run homer and drove in three for Minnesota, which had won its previous three. Glen Perkins blew his fourth save by allowing the game-tying run in the ninth, while Anthony Swarzak suffered his first loss of the year. He allowed a long home run by Padre outfielder Seth Smith. Twins starter Kevin Correia allowed three runs in six innings of work. Minnesota begins a four-game weekend road series at Oakland tonight.
Twins star Joe Mauer continued his minor league rehabilitation assignment at Class A Cedar Rapids with a hitless night in three at-bats last evening. Mauer had a strikeout in the game, reached base on a fielder's choice, and flew out to deep left field. He is now 1-for-6 in his two games with the Kernels. He played first base last night after serving as the designated hitter on Tuesday. He will take the day off today and return to the Cedar Rapids lineup tomorrow. Cedar Rapids lost to Wisconsin 6-1 last night. Twins pitcher Ricky Nolasco is scheduled to start for the Kernels in Sunday's game.
The Minnesota Twins extended their minor league contract with the Cedar Rapids Kernels through the 2020 season. The two organizations made the announcement yesterday while star big league player Joe Mauer is playing in Cedar Rapids. The extension is the maximum allowed by baseball. The two franchises have been affiliated for two seasons. Cedar Rapids plays in the Class A Midwest League. Cedar Rapids is around a four-hour drive south of the Twin Cities.
The logo for the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game to be played at Great American Ball Park was revealed yesterday. Reds CEO Bob Castellini and other people from the organization showed off the design with MLB Vice President Tim Brosnan and Cincinnati mayor John Cranley. The game is scheduled to be played on July 14th, 2015. The 2014 Midsummer Classic was played in Minneapolis at Target Field with a logo featuring an outline of the ballpark.
The Minnesota Vikings have today off and will open up preseason play tomorrow night against the Oakland Raiders at TCF Bank Stadium. Vikes head coach Mike Zimmer says rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater won't start the game, but will get time with the No. 1 offense. The team will then have Saturday off before resuming training camp on Sunday. In roster news, the Vikings waived tight end A.C. Leonard yesterday.
The NFL preseason begins in earnest tonight with six games on the slate. A Super Bowl rematch pits the Seahawks and Broncos against one another in Denver. Other games have the Colts at the Jets, the Patriots at the Redskins, the 49ers at the Ravens, the Bengals at the Chiefs and the Cowboys at the Chargers. Six more games are on tap Friday. The Giants beat the Bills 17-13 in the Hall of Fame Game this past Sunday.
The University of Minnesota football team practices again today as fall camp continues for the Golden Gophers. Head coach Jerry Kill will put his team through a single practice this afternoon. Running back David Cobb rushed for 12-hundred yards last year and says he is even more comfortable with the offense this season. In fact, Cobb says the team should have more playmakers on offense spread around the football field. Minnesota opens the regular season on August 28th against Eastern Illinois at TCF Bank Stadium.
The WNBA Minnesota Lynx look to extend their winning streak to 11 straight games tonight as they host the Chicago Sky at the Target Center. Minnesota is second in the Western Conference at 23-and-6, a game-and-a-half behind Phoenix. The Sky are 13-and-16. Tip time is 7 p.m.
Tiger Woods is ready to tee it up at this week's PGA Championship. The former world number-one played a practice round at Valhalla Golf Club on Wednesday and said he is pain-free. Woods withdrew from this past Sunday's final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational with back spasms. He says they were unrelated to the back surgery that kept him out of action for several months earlier this year. The PGA Championship begins today.
It was a night to remember for Landon Donovan as the MLS All-Stars topped Bayern Munich 2-1 at the 2014 MLS All-Star game on Wednesday in Portland. The Galaxy product netted the winning goal in the 70th minute and also made a record 14th appearance at the All-Star Game. Robert Lewandowski struck first for Bayern early in the first half and Bradley Wright-Phillips of the New York Red Bulls tied the score in the 51st minute. Bayern head coach Pep Guardiola left the pitch without shaking the hand of Caleb Porter, the All-Star's head coach. Guardiola was upset with several tough tackles on his players. The MLS is now 8-3-and-1 against International opponents in the All-Star game format.
The Sprint Cup Series is heading for a road course this week. Drivers will make left and right turns during the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen from Watkins Glen International in New York. Jeff Gordon currently leads the standings by 24 points over teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr.
