MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Vikings name Freeman starter
Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier says Josh Freeman will his team's new starting quarterback for the Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants in New Jersey. Frazier says he consulted with management and ownership this past Monday and they all concluded they wanted to move forward this week with Freeman as the top signal-caller. Freeman joined the team just last week after signing as a free agent following his departure from Tampa Bay earlier this month. Frazier says Christian Ponder will serve as the No. 2 Q-B, with Matt Cassell listed as the third-stringer. The Vikings are 1-and-4 on the season and looking for a kick-start to their season. The Giants are 0-and-6 and also could use a lift. Monday's game begins at 7:40 p.m.
Golden Gopher football players say they definitely want to play well for their absent head coach Jerry Kill when they hit the field at Northwestern on Saturday morning. Kill is seeking medical treatment and testing to try to help alleviate seizures he suffers from epilepsy and has left the team for the time being. Acting head coach Tracy Claeys (CLAYZ) has taken over the temporary head coaching duties. Gopher redshirt freshman tight end Maxx Williams of Waconia says they will go into the week just as they would if Kill were with them. He says Kill often talks about "next man up" and that's how the team has to approach it. Kickoff on Saturday is 11 a.m.
The Big Ten Conference has released the league football schedule for 2018 and 2019. The Golden Gophers will host four conference games and play five Big Ten road games in 2018, while hosting five league games and traveling for four games in 2019. The Big Ten had previously released the schedules for 2016 and 2017.
The Minnesota Timberwolves continue their week of practice and head coach Rick Adelman says he wants them to continue to work hard at building some chemistry. The Wolves are in the middle of an eight-day lull between preseason games and Adelman says it is a good thing because they can really go hard in practice, both physically and mentally Minnesota plays Boston in an exhibition game in Montreal on Sunday night.
The Minnesota Wild play in Florida tonight to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning. Josh Harding is expected to be back in net tonight after relieving Darcy Kuemper in Tuesday's 4-1 loss at Toronto. Minnesota is 3-2-2 so far this year and will continue their road trip with a game at Florida on Saturday. Tampa Bay is 4-and-2 on the season. Faceoff in St. Petersburg tonight is 6:30 p.m.
