Minnesota Sports Roundup: Vikings win in overtime

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota's Blair Walsh nailed a 38-yard field goal in overtime to lead the Vikings to a 26-23 win over the Jaguars yesterday at the Metrodome.

Adrian Peterson rumbled for 84 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns in his first game since suffering a severe knee injury last season. Walsh had three total field goals, and Christian Ponder finished 20-of-27 for 270 yards in the season-opening win at Mall of America Field. Blaine Gabbert threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns for Jacksonville. Marcedes Lewis and Cecil Shorts each hauled in a score, and Maurice Jones-Drew rushed 19 times for 77 yards in defeat.

University of Minnesota quarterback MarQueis Gray passed for 100 yards and a touchdown as Minnesota mauled New Hampshire 44-7 on Saturday. Gray also rushed for 109 yards and two scores to help the Gophers improve to 2-0. The Gophers will host Western Michigan on Saturday.

The University of Minnesota women's soccer team ran by DePaul 3-0 yesterday, getting all three goals from sophomore Taylor Uhl of Eden Prairie. The Golden Gophers are now 5-3 on the season. Minnesota opens Big Ten play on Sunday at Ohio State at noon.

Minnesota's Justin Morneau hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to push the Twins past the Indians, 8-7. It was Morneau's second homer of the day and he also had three RBI, while Joe Mauer chipped in with three hits. Brian Duensing came away with the win in relief for Minnesota, which has won two of the first three in the four-game series. Carlos Santana was 3-for-5 with a solo shot and two RBI for the Tribe. Vinnie Pestano took the loss. The teams wrap up a four-game set tonight at Target Field.

Minnesota's Maya Moore had 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists as the Lynx rolled to an 81-62 win over the Silver Stars. Rebekkah Brunson added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Lynx, who have reeled off 11 straight wins. Minnesota was without star player Seimone Augustus, who has a foot injury. The Lynx will be in Chicago tomorrow night.
