Minnesota's Nelson win second straight NCAA wrestling title
DES MOINES, Iowa - University of Minnesota heavyweight wrestler Tony Nelson won his second straight NCAA Division I title Saturday night in the finals of the national meet at Wells Fargo Arena.
Nelson defeated Big Ten rival Mike McMullan of Northwestern 6-2 in the championship match. Nelson becomes the fifth Gopher wrestler to win back-to-back titles and is only the second from the heavyweight class. The last person to do so was Cole Konrad in 2006 and 2007. Nelson with a 33-1 record
The Golden Gophers as a team finished third behind Penn State and Oklahoma State with 103 points. The U had eight All-Americans in this year's national meet. Besides Nelson there was David Thorn, seventh at 125; Chris Dardanes, sixth at 133; Nick Dardanes, seventh at 141; Dylan Ness, fourth at 149; Cody Yohn, seventh at 157; Logan Storley, fourth at 174 and Scott Schiller, fifth at 197.
