More deer registered at area stations than in 2011

Overall, gun-deer hunters registered more animals over the nine-day season ending Sunday than during last year's same hunt.

Seven of the nine registration stations providing figures to the Herald Monday of this week recorded increases from a year ago, while two had decreases. The following numbers are from early this week and at the same time last year:

Ellsworth, SuperAmerica, 945 (2012), 753 (2011); Elmwood, Sandbar Too, 579 ('12), 545 ('11); Hager City, 63 Express, 291 ('12), 251 ('11); Maiden Rock, Park Service and Convenience, 496 ('12), 505 ('11); Martell, Red Barn, 389 ('12), 259 ('11); Plum City, Dean's Bar, 647 ('12), 596 ('11); Prescott, Bob and Steve's BP Amoco, 161 ('12), 174 ('11); River Falls, Bob and Steve's BP Amoco, 463 ('12), 384 ('11); and Spring Valley, Sneaker's Pub, 279 ('12), 212 ('11).

There was a total of 4,250 deer registered in the county this season, compared with 3,679 registered here last season.
