No. 3 Badgers upend No. 1 Denver 4-3 to win weekend series
Justin Schultz scored the game-winner with a goal in the third period against top-ranked Denver. That gave the Wisconsin men's hockey team a 4-3 victory and kept the Pioneers from moving into first place in the WCHA standings. Craig Smith and Jordy Murray also scored for Wisconsin which moved to within a game of Denver and just two points off the conference lead. Wisconsin's record is 14-6-3, including 10-5-2 in the WCHA. Brett Bennett had 30 saves for the Badgers, including 13 in a wild final period.
Wisconsin is at first-place Minnesota-Duluth this weekend.
The Wisconsin women's hockey team dominated play, out-shooting St. Cloud State 37-24, but the Huskies found the range more often. They earned a split of the weekend series in Madison by taking a 4-3 decision Saturday afternoon. Brooke Ammerman, Mallory Deluce and Brianna Decker had goals for the Badgers. Decker's tied the score at three early in the third period. St. Cloud State scored off a rebound with a little less than five minutes to go. Wisconsin's record falls to 14-9-3, including 11-8-1 in conference play.
