PRESCOTT - The Prescott High school baseball team redeemed itself from a bad outing Tuesday with a 3-1 win over No. 2 Ellsworth Thursday at Firehall Field.

The No. 6 ranked Cardinals came into the game on the heels of a 2-0 upset loss at Osceola Tuesday. But playing the top-ranked Panthers brought out the Redbirds' best according to head coach Jeff Ryan.

"When you are playing one of the best teams in the state your approach as a team has to respond to that challenge and we did today," Ryan said. "We just have to have the same approach or close to it for every contest."

PHS was certain on top of their game when it came to hitting the ball and playing defense. Alex Helmer ripped a double into right field on a 3-2, two-out count to put the home team in front 1-0 on Evan Bayer's run in the third inning. Prescott scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice RBI by Marty Harris, which scored Justin Lynner, and an RBI-single for Bayer which scored Matt Holman, who beat the tag of EHS catcher Jonah Conway at the plate in a controversial call.

Ellsworth tied the score at 1-1 on an RBI-single by Conway which scored Mike Koch in the top half of the fourth. The Panthers had the bases loaded in the inning and in the fifth but could only manage one run.

"We just didn't get the clutch hits we had been getting all season." EHS head coach Steve Block said.

Dennis Schutz had two hits, including a double, to lead Ellsworth. Logan Armstrong also doubled for the Panthers. Helmer and Bayer had two hits for PHS.

Clay Seifert was the winning pitcher and Brady Schommer got the save. Both teams are now 15-2 overall. Ellsworth still has a game lead in the Middle Border Conference standings and can clinch the title outright Tuesday at Somerset. If Ellsworth loses and Prescott can beat Osceola at home Tuesday, the Cardinals will clinch a share of the title.
