No longer just a nursing home
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

PRESCOTT--The perception 10, for sure 20 years ago, was when one entered a nursing home, the next time they would be leaving it would be for their funeral.

Not so anymore, as explained Jim Selvy, Administrator of Prescott Nursing and Rehabilitation. During a recent period, the facility admitted 95 people, and 81 percent rehabilitated and went home.

“It shows you how things are different,” he said during a June 5 visit to the Kiwanis Club of Prescott. “Hospital visits are getting shorter because residents don’t want to be there and payers are saying get them out of there because (hospitals) are expensive.”

And places like Prescott Nursing and Rehabilitation are opening their doors and saying we’ll take you in.

“We’ve expanded a bit on what we can take care of now,” said Rose Kinneman, Director of Nursing.

For example, “People who need to be on IV’s or antibiotics, we can do that. People who need dialysis, every third day, for example, we can do that.”

Kinneman also said a company comes in and will do X-Rays or EKG’s.

“We will take older and younger patients as well,” she continued. “We are not an old folks home.”

To reiterate that point, she told the story of a 32-year-old mother, with three kids under the age of five, who couldn’t walk as she was seriously injured in a car accident. Thanks to the physical therapy offered, she was up and walking after six weeks. Occupational and speech therapy are also offered.

“We want you healthy, so you don’t come back,” Kinneman concluded.

There are nurses on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Five during the day, two to three at night and one overnight.
